Our broken immigration system is a major problem that the American people expect their elected leaders to solve. Tonight the President rightly spent much of his address focused on the economic and jobs crisis. Fixing our broken immigration system is key to fixing our economy. He urged Congress to work together on bi-partisan solutions to deliver for the American people. We look forward to working with the President and Congressional leaders on bipartisan solutions.
American voters are wary of partisan politics that focus more on process than progress. Comprehensive immigration reform requires Republican and Democratic support and it represents a valuable opportunity for both parties to prove to the American public that they can work together and move from rhetoric and deliver realistic solutions that work for our nation. The Forum will be working to achieve reform that protects the rights of all, values immigrants and their contributions, keeps families together, enhances our security by focusing scarce resources, and ensures a future flow of immigration that serves workers and our economy, and requires undocumented immigrants to register for legal status leading to citizenship.
President Obama pledged to the American people to reform immigration to create a better, safer, and more humane system than we have now. We will be looking closely at the release of the President's FY2011 on Monday, February 1st. We expect a clearly articulated budget that reflects the President's commitment to changing our nation's approach to immigration policies and enforcement. The President's budget must improve transparency, accountability and oversight of our immigration system.
We are optimistic that the President will follow through on his commitment to work with Congress to enact immigration reform legislation that fixes our nation's flawed immigration system.
