Muslim Ban is Beyond Disheartened

The Supreme Court’s decision this week allows Trump’s racist Muslim Ban to stand. This represents  another shameful mark on our history. Make no mistake: this case will join the disgraceful line of cases where the High Court turned its back on our values, like Dred Scott (endorsed slavery) and Korematsu (upheld Japanese American imprisonment)

This heartless and xenophobic executive order now has the Court’s permission to continue tearing families apart and throwing lives into despair. Not only that, but it sends a clear message to Muslims and refugees that they are not welcomed in this country.

Regardless of what the Supreme Court says, this ban is a clear violation of this country’s values. The Muslim Ban is not only anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim, it goes against everything our country should stand for

5. ¡Ora por ellos!

Evan Rachel Wood, Actress, To Continue Day 2 of Immigration Fast and Prayer Chain

Evan Rachel Wood arrives in South Texas in solidarity with the over 2400 children who were separated to participate in the 24-day fast and prayer chain to protest family separations and cruel detention of families at the border

McAllen, TX—The Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” policy has set off a humanitarian crisis along the U.S./Mexico border, unjustly separated over 2,400 children from their parents. In their response to criticism from across the political spectrum, the administration has moved toward the indefinite detention of families as the “solution.” This is not only immoral, it is also illegal under U.S. and international law.

La Union del Pueblo Entero (LUPE), Texas Civil Rights Project (TCRP), Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights, and Neta will protest these wrongful actions that hurt the immigrant community of the Rio Grande Valley through a 24-hour hunger strike and prayer chain that will last 24 days, in honor of the more than 2,400 children separated from their parents.

Fasting as a means of nonviolent protest is a historic tool utilized by Cesar Chavez, the founder of La Union del Pueblo Entero, in resistance to the injustice faced by farm workers of Mexican descent. Cesar’s commitment to nonviolent protest, including his fasts, won the support and friendship of Robert F. Kennedy to the farm worker cause.

This event reflects the lasting bond between the work of Cesar Chavez, the Texas Civil Rights Project, and the Kennedy family. TCRP represented UFW members in major lawsuits such as the inclusion of farm workers in the benefits of unemployment and workers compensation insurance, among others. The Kennedy family accompanied Cesar as he broke his first fast in 1968. We all stand united with courage against the actions taken by administration officials and Border Patrol that are inflicting enormous harm on immigrant families at the border.

Jason Rittereiser Will Represent Immigration Officials Who Refuse to Enforce Trump’s Immoral and Illegal Family Separation Policy

Jason’s law firm HKM Employment Attorneys will provide pro-bono legal assistance to federal and state employees who refuse to enforce Trump’s policy separating children from parents

Issaquah, WA – Former King County Deputy Prosecutor and 8th Congressional District Democratic Candidate Jason Rittereiser announced today that his law firm HKM will challenge the Trump administration’s policy to force federal and state employees to separate children from their parents. HKM will provide pro-bono representation to any employee tasked with implementing this policy who objects to enforcing this cruel policy but fears retaliation should they refuse to do so.
“Like so many Americans, I am outraged by the Trump administration’s policy of separating children from their parents.  This is un-American,” Jason said. “Today I am announcing that we are launching a nationwide pro-bono legal effort to proudly assist any federal or state employee who refuses to enforce this horrific policy.”
While prominent figures on both sides of the aisle have raised serious concerns about this immoral policy out of the Trump Administration, Jason’s legal effort is the first of its kind to provide legal assistance for employees who refuse to enforce the Trump Administration’s “zero tolerance” policy responsible for the separation of more than 2,000 children from their parents at the southern border.
After the Trump administration’s announcement that he will only end family separation as part of a larger bargain that overhauls the entire immigration system, legal protections for workers could be the first step to forcing the Trump Administration to reconsider their terrible policy.
At least one immigration official responsible for caring for the children affected by this policy has already resigned over this policy. Antar Davidson, an employee of nonprofit Southwest Key that operates more than two dozen shelters for migrant children from Texas to California, said that he resigned after he was instructed to inform six year old and ten year old siblings that they could not hug each other as they grieved the separation from their mother.
If you’re a federal or state employee interested in learning more about your legal rights and options, go to www.hkm.com/child.

South Texas HIDTA Task Force members seize a cache of assault weapons and armament

LAREDO, Texas — On Tuesday, special agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Laredo’s High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area led an enforcement action that resulted in the seizure of 21 long arm rifles, 962 rounds of ammunition, magazines, belt fed magazines, ballistic plates, armor carriers and ghillie suits.

“Homeland Security Investigations will continue to leverage its expansive authorities to combat transnational criminal organizations”, said Assistant Special Agent in Charge, Adrian Flores, HSI Laredo.  “HSI’s partnership with Federal, state, and local law enforcement in Laredo, Texas is crucial to ensuring public safety and national security in the U.S. and Mexico.”
According to authorities, in June of 2018, Task Force members were conducting surveillance of a downtown Laredo parking lot. This is where they witnessed an individual transfer boxes from one vehicle to another. Task Force members approached the individual and conducted a preliminary search inside the vehicle. During the search they discovered a large cache of weapons and other related merchandise. Law enforcement suspect that the merchandise was about to be smuggled to Mexico.
No immediate arrests were made in connection to the seizure.
The HIDTA task force is composed of HSI special agents, investigators from the Laredo Police Department, Webb County Sheriff’s Office, Zapata County Sheriff’s Office, and Customs and Border Protection’s U.S. Border Patrol and Office of Field Operations.  The task force identifies, disrupts and dismantles drug trafficking organizations and their illicit activities which destabilize communities in the south Texas area and beyond.
HSI is the principal investigative arm of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and investigates a diverse portfolio of federal laws.  HSI is responsible for investigating violations of U.S. customs and immigration laws pertaining to border security, homeland security and public safety.
In fiscal year 2017, HSI special agents seized 5855 weapons and 673,327 rounds of ammunition, helping to keep communities safer both in the United States and Mexico.

Homeland Security Investigations has exclusive jurisdiction to investigate the smuggling of weaponry into Mexico.  Additionally, the possession of a firearm with an altered or obliterated serial number is a violation of federal firearms laws.

Congressman Gonzalez Thanks First Lady Melania Trump for Visiting Migrant Children in South Texas Facilities

First lady Melania Trump wore a jacket that read "I really don't care. Do U?" while boarding her plane to tour an immigrant children's shelter

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) issued the following statement in response to First Lady Melania Trump’s visit to McAllen, Texas to witness, firsthand, the effects of the administration’s ‘zero-tolerance’ policy:

“Children are sacred - no matter where they are from,” Congressman Gonzalez said. “I would like to extend my gratitude to First Lady Melania Trump for visiting South Texas to assess the situation firsthand and standing up for children, American values, and humanity. I would also like to welcome her back as we continue to work our way through this crisis.”

Castro Remarks on the President’s Zero-Humanity Immigration Policy, Family Separation

WASHINGTON—Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20), a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, and First Vice Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, made the following remarks on the House Floor against the Trump Administration’s policy of separating immigrant children from their families at the border:
“Thank you, Congressman Garamendi. Thank you for your passion and your profound words on this very difficult subject, not only for members of the United States Congress but also for many Americans across the country.
“I had the opportunity yesterday, along with several other members of Congress including Bennie Thompson—the Ranking Democratic member on the Homeland Security Committee—Sheila Jackson Lee, Frederica Wilson, Ben Ray Luján, and Filemon Vela to visit two sites where these young kids are being kept in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas.
“One of them Casa Padre and the other one Casa Presidente. And when we were there, myself and a few other members of Congress met two young children who were being held without their parents. They were separated from their parents.
“One of them was named Roger, an 8 year old boy—I’m sorry, an 8 month old boy. Eight months old.
“The administrators told us that his mother is actually deceased and they believe that he came to the country with his sister, though she is nowhere to be found.
“The other was a young girl named Leah. She was 1 year old, and she was separated from her parents.
“These are among the youngest victims of this brutal policy of President Trump in separating young children from their parents.
“Most Americans believe that we can enforce our immigration laws and still respect human dignity and human rights.
“But in going down the road that this president has taken us, he’s taking us down a road where we’re losing our own humanity. He’s taking us down a road that is reminiscent of the worst episodes of moral failures in the country’s history. The things that as Americans we deeply regret.
“I also, because, we’ve been asked by many Americans over the last few weeks in particular a common question as members of Congress: ‘What are you doing to stop this?’
“And I want to say thank you to my colleagues that were with me yesterday.
“Thank you also to Nancy Pelosi and the members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus who visited San Diego. To Beto O’Rourke and Joe Kennedy, who were in Tornillo near the tent city, tent cities, near El Paso. To Frank Pallone and Hakeem Jeffries and Jerry Nadler that were out in the New York/New Jersey area. To Debbie Wasserman Schultz and others who were in Florida.
“We’re pushing legislation, we’re out on the streets. We’re organizing rallies. We’re doing every single thing that we can to change this. To end it.
“And thank you to the folks in the Senate who also made a trip to McAllen and to Senator Merkley, without whose help and support a few weeks ago in Brownsville, this issue would not nearly have gotten the same amount of attention.
“You know, this year marks 50 years since we lost two titans in American history: Martin Luther King and Robert F. Kennedy. And Robert F. Kennedy said 52 years ago in a famous speech that he gave in South Africa on their Day of Affirmation.
“Senator Kennedy said back then—Robert F. Kennedy said back then: ‘Moral courage is a rare commodity than bravery in battle or great intelligence, yet it is the one essential vital quality for those who seek to change the world that yields most painfully to change.’
“What we’re asking is for this Congress to have the moral courage to listen to the American people and do right by these immigrants. I yield back.”
