House Democrats officially announce 2 articles of impeachment against Trump: ‘We will defend the Constitution’

By Alex Henderson

At a Tuesday morning press conference, House Democrats officially announced plans to bring two articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump: abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.
With House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Rep. Maxine Waters of California at his side, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler explained why House Democrats are pursuing those two articles of impeachment. Trump, Nadler told reporters, committed “abuse of power” as defined by the U.S. Constitution when he “solicited and pressured Ukraine to interfere in our 2020 election.”
Describing Trump as a “president who sees himself as above the law,” Nadler told reporters, “We do not take this action lightly” but added that because House Democrats are bound by the U.S. Constitution, “we must take this solemn step today.”
Trump committed obstruction of Congress, Nadler explained, when he did everything he could to obstruct the House’s impeachment inquiry.
Following Nadler’s statements, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff addressed reporters — asserting that Trump “abused the power of his office” by withholding military aid to Ukraine in the hope that the Ukrainian government would investigate a political revival. The rival Schiff was obviously referring to is former Vice President Joe Biden.
“The evidence of the president’s misconduct is overwhelming and uncontested,” Schiff told reporters.
Schiff went on to say, “It is a question of duty….. We will defend the Constitution.”
