Statement of the OAS General Secretariat on the Situation in Nicaragua

The General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS) expresses its concern and condemns the latest acts of repression and detention of protesters reported in Nicaragua.
The siege and harassment of the families of political prisoners in the church of San Miguel de Masaya is a blatant violation of the rights of people who are expressing themselves peacefully for the freedom of their relatives.
In the same way, the OAS General Secretariat rejects the detention of at least 13 people who were showing their support for the relatives of prisoners and calls for their immediate release. There arrest is even more deplorable as these people were under the protection of the Catholic Church, an entity recognized by all political actors in Nicaragua.
The OAS General Secretariat continues monitoring closely the situation in Nicaragua and reiterates the need for the restoration of civil and political freedoms, peace, justice and the return of democratic institutions in the country. Events such as those that have occurred represent a setback in recent advances in Nicaragua, and reaffirm the need to reestablish a framework for dialogue between the different sectors of society in order to avoid the progressive deterioration of the climate of social coexistence and democratic norms.

La Secretaría General de la Organización de los Estados Americanos (OEA) manifiesta su preocupación y condena ante los últimos hechos de represión y detención de manifestantes reportados en Nicaragua.
El asedio y hostigamiento a los familiares de presos políticos en la iglesia de San Miguel de Masaya resulta un acto flagrante de vulneración de los derechos de las personas que se expresan pacíficamente por la libertad de sus familiares.
Del mismo modo, la Secretaría General de la OEA rechaza por improcedente, abusiva y arbitraria la detención de al menos 13 personas que se encontraban apoyando a los familiares de presos y reclama su inmediata liberación. Es especialmente lamentable que estás personas hayan sido detenidas a pesar de encontrarse bajo la protección de la Iglesia Católica, una entidad reconocida por todos los actores políticos en Nicaragua.
La Secretaría General de la OEA continúa siguiendo atentamente la situación en Nicaragua y reitera la necesidad del restablecimiento de las libertades civiles y políticas, la paz, la justicia y la reinstitucionalizacón democrática en el país. Hechos como los acaecidos representan un retroceso en los avances logrados recientemente en Nicaragua, y reafirman la necesidad de restablecer un marco de diálogo entre los distintos sectores de la sociedad a los efectos de evitar el progresivo deterioro del clima de convivencia social y de las normas democráticas.
