These days the topic
of feminicide is heard a lot. Although it is a scourge that has been in
humanity for a long time, nowadays the Mexican society has awakened due to
recent cases of brutal and sadistic murders of women, which have shocked the
country.
President Andrés
Manuel López Obrador, although aware of this problem, has responded in his
morning conferences in a very philosophical, instructive, detailed manner, as
well as avoiding talking about the in depth about the matter, delegating others
to resolve the problem.
In Nuestra America
Magazine, we have already published several articles analyzing this evil way to
treat women, which has millenary roots. Solutions, there are many, wiliness of
the authorities and experts, almost none. Many words, many speeches, but
actions, shine by their absence in most cases.
In Mexico, according
to the National Citizen Observatory of Feminicide, seven Mexicans are murdered
every day and only 25% of the cases are investigated as femicides.
The murder of women in
Mexico gained international notoriety in 1993, when the cases of women murdered
on the northern border city of Ciudad Juárez began to be publicly denounced. It
took Mexico two decades to consider femicide as a crime. Today, the whole
country is like Ciudad Juarez.
To better understand
the terms used when talking about this social evil, the Royal Spanish Academy
says that feminicide is the murder of a woman at the hands of a man for
machismo or misogyny, which is disgust for women.
At the press
conference on Tuesday, February 18, President López Obrador was questioned
about his lack of action on the issue. And he simply answered: “We are in the
best disposition to work together ”, said the president. “We are attending all
social problems, the causes, going to the bottom, to strength values, avoid the
disintegration of families, the family is fundamental, maybe in other countries
not so much, but in Mexico the family is the main pillar of coexistence. ”
I believe that the
social problem of feminicide must be treated from education in schools, to get
into the minds of boys and girls that hitting a woman is bad, it is not
acceptable in society. Although I sympathize with the women who have taken to
the streets with their faces covered to paint walls and historical monuments, I
consider to protests to those who promote machismo: the film industry that has
raised machista values in its films. Television stations that produce soap
operas highlighting the masculine power over women. Protest in the cantinas, in
the night clubs, in the brothels, where the perpetrators are, drinking beer with provocatively dressed women sitting on
their laps.
I remember as a young boy,
seeing many mothers, housewives, crying when they saw their life reflected in
soap operas while the walls of their houses were stained with blood due to the
slaps or punches of their husband on their faces. A belt or whip at hand, so
that the cowardly spouse will take it to whip both her and the children. Many
mothers tried or committed suicide by not taking their spouse's rage anymore.
It is very true that
when a woman complains to the authorities, they almost ignore her. Most people
who take cases are men. And seeing a woman who complains, I remember as a young
man one said as an excuse not to take the complaint "... well look how you’re
dressed, he was right to hit you."
Ricardo Monroy wrote
on Facebook “For officials of public ministries it is easier to tell relatives
of missing women 'for sure she left with the boyfriend'; well before starting
an investigation. The authorities usually relate the disappearances of women
due to family problems, drug or alcohol use instead of understanding the
complexity of the violence experienced in Mexico City. "
"The authorities
do not want to accept that violence against women is a more complex issue,
which goes beyond family, couple, drug and alcohol problems. They justify
themselves by not wanting to risk their work team, are colluded or do not want
to accept it. "
About three decades
ago I wrote an article that bore the title: ‘Goddess Slave has been the woman’.
At that time, I quoted José Martí who said: “Women must be by her man’s side, as
a companion, and not at his feet like a beautiful toy. ”
