WASHINGTON
– Tonight, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) issued a statement in response
to President Trump’s State of the Union address to the United States Congress:
“While
I share the President’s optimism for the future of our country and the American
people, tonight’s speech fails to acknowledge the harsh realities many
Americans are experiencing.
This
administration has fought tooth and nail to dismantle health care for millions
of Americans, removing protections for those with pre-existing conditions,
proposed steep cuts to Social Security, and caved to drug companies. The most
recent assault on Americans’ access to health care is the new illegal Medicaid
block-grant scheme to cap and slash Medicaid and push recipients off lifesaving
medicines, impose unaffordable premiums, and leave more families vulnerable to
skyrocketing health care costs.
Tonight
affirmed that House Democrats must continue passing meaningful legislation to
address our crumbling infrastructure, fight corruption, raise wages for working
families, and lower the cost of prescription drugs for seniors and
families.
It
is time for the president to put aside the rhetoric and seize the opportunity
to help the American people by advocating for the more than 275 bipartisan
bills that sit dormant in the Senate and encouraging bipartisanship on our
shared priorities moving forward.”
